REIA has kept you up to date in Real News on the proposed changes
to the Do Not Call Register.
To recap, in November 2009, it was announced that the Government
had introduced the Do Not Call Amendment Bill for comment which
would extend the Do Not Call Register Act 2006 (the DNCR Act)
to allow all business and government numbers, fax numbers and
emergency service numbers to be included on the register.
The proposed extension of the DNCR to include business phone
numbers would have meant that if an agent or firm contact another
business for marketing purposes without ‘express consent’ they can
be fined if the firm they are contacting are listed on the DNCR.
REIA put forward a submission highlighting the impact the changes
would have had on the real estate profession.
We are pleased to announce that Senator Conroy has made the
decision that the extension would go ahead as planned but without
the extension to business numbers. This means that the Do Not Call
Register is currently being extended to include government numbers
(including emergency service numbers) and fax numbers.
In addition the length of time that numbers can remain on the Do Not
Call Register was extended from three years to five years.
This outcome is in line with what REIA requested in its submission
to the Extension of the Do Not Call Register and would like to
thank members of the profession who put forward relevant industry
examples, included in the submission.
